National Diabetes Audit, Leeds

The National Diabetes Audit (NDA) required expansion and automation to handle massive datasets from numerous healthcare providers, aiming to become a pivotal resource for diabetes care improvement across the UK.

Our consultancy team at NHS Digital guided the NDA's transformation into the world’s largest diabetes patient data repository. This involved automating data extraction from over 7,200 GP practices across England and Wales.

Over a span of five years, we leveraged advanced data management techniques and an analytics platform to scale up the NDA. We expanded the database to include records from outpatient, inpatient, and gestational diabetes care settings, despite facing and overcoming significant challenges in data governance and integration.

The NDA now stands as a beacon of success in UK public health, comprising over 2.3 million patient records. This comprehensive dataset serves as a critical tool for improving care and treatment outcomes for individuals living with diabetes. By providing healthcare professionals and policymakers with access to detailed, longitudinal diabetes data, the NDA supports both informed decision-making at a local level and promotes best practices in policy and diabetes management nationwide.
